THE HARDLUCK TROPHY

The hard luck trophy is awarded to the unfortunate individual who has car problems during a club event.  Whether the repairs are made during a road side seminar or worst after the vehicle is trailered or towed home to the garage, the outcome is the same.  You will be the lucky recipient of the Hard Luck trophy for one month.  It's all in good fun and you are asked to add some small and hopefully light weight item that represents the nature of your break down.  The old trophy had become so heavy that it has been retired but a new one has been made.  Bill Corson was the first recipient of the new trophy.  Below are some of our most recent Lucky winners.

========================================================================================

November:  The trophy this month found it’s way to  Pacific Beach, Ralph Schuler had a problem with his carburetor during the Idyllwild tour.  He only made it as far as Scripps Ranch and turned around to get the modern.  He an Joyce caught up with the group before we made it up the mountain.

October :  Arlyn - It was bitter sweet to see one of our mechanics take home the trophy.  See it can happen to anyone.  He had a problem with the coil as the group headed down the parade route on the 4th of July.  He was able to change out the coil and drive on home.

September: Ed Woodruff was kind enough to take the fall for all of those who had car problems while on the Laughlin tour.  Then in August he had a problem on the Mission tour, and had to take the trophy home again.  This time the problem was with the ignition switch, and it has been corrected he hopes.  There were no pictures taken while he was stuck in the middle of Morena Blvd.  Sorry!

August:  The trip to Laughlin this year was a tough one on the group.  With many road side seminar Ed Woodruff started it off with an electrical problem and had his truck towed home then met up with the group in Laughlin in his modern.  Just a few more miles up the road Karen W. didn't want to be out done so  a frozen water pump need to be changed out on the side of I-15 (those guys are good).  Valarie B had some overheating on the first really good grade, all she needed was some water, Dave S. car didn't want to leave the rest area on the I-10 the ladies pushed and pushed and pushed only to find the coil wire had fallen out.  Paul A came out of the hotel Friday morning to a flat tire,  Valarie found water in her oil before heading home so she became a trailer queen on Terry trailer again.  Sue had a minor electrical problem at the railroad track in Amboy that's not the first time the tracks have caused us a problem.  Then she ran short on gas just short of Amboy.   Ed Woodruff was man enough to step forward and took the trophy for the group. Sorry no pictures of Paul's flat or Dave's coil wire!

July: Paul Winchester tried to be sneaky, but he and Gene Amy made a side trip to Pep Boys once the group arrived in Palm Springs.  He said he had to buy a coil for his tractor but we didn't believe that story.  You can read about his adventure in the August Quail Call.  It's worth the read.

May &June: Ron Peterson tried to sneak to the curb without anyone noticing but he was caught.  Something about junk in his gas tank.  Check out his repair before heading to Orange County Pancake breakfast.  For Three months Ron fought with his junk in his gas tank.... it has not be removed, cleaned, sealed and reinstalled....

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

April: Gene Amy has a problem with his kill switch, he tried to blame it on is passenger but we have a picture with the hood up.  It took a few minutes to figure out was the problem was.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

February:  Chuck Niemeyer was trying to be sly when the battery on his 29 AA truck just wasn’t up to par.  He was seen being assisted by fellow member Webb Smith after the International Model A Day last July.  Pictures don’t lie.  You’re a good sport Chuck!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

JANUARY: Jean Anderson had a condensor problem while return from the Vista Engine Show in October.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DECEMBER: Jimm Kiklis provided some  kodak moments before the Descanso parade.  His car just wouldn’t start, and they were unable to diagnose and fix the problem in the target parking lot, we left him behind to wait for a tow truck.  The problem was the ignition switch, which has been repaired.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOVEMBER: Ron Peterson not only had some Hardluck with his hubley at the annual Hubley Derby, but once we were ready to head for home, his truck started to act up too.  A push start was needed to get him running but we always have willing pushers, they’re just glad it’s not them.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OCTOBER: Harry & Marlene Whelan had a multitude of little problems while on a tour earlier this year.  After changing out a lot of little parts it works great now.  Many hands under the hood.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ed Woodruff had a wild ride getting from San Diego to Temecula.  It seems he lost the brake clevis and pin while travel north on the I-15 to Laughlin.  A replacement part was located and installed with a minimum of delay.  The rest of the trip to Laughlin gave him no more problem.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ron Peterson took   home the trophy last month, he had multiple problems (overheating & distributor) while on the Orange County tour back in March.  Thank goodness the problems didn’t start till we arrived in the City of Orange, and the vehicle came  home on a trailer.

Jimm Kiklis was last months lucky winner of the hard luck trophy, way to go Jimm!  He had a slight problem with his water pump during the  Feb. back country tour.  On the way home it became apparent that the only thing they could do was cut the fan belt, so Arlyn with all the skill of a samurai soldier cut that fan belt.  Jimm and Sharon made it home and into the garage before the engine just couldn’t take any more.  With one final hiss,  Old Faithful pull, but they were home safe and sound and all the repairs have been made.  Again!
